Stefania Orrù

A work of art, for me, is like a place where you can find a capacity to feel, where you can meet with a humanity that has moved forward, even just slightly, its boundary and walks now on a new border, where is learning to see something that is continuously changing and renewing itself.

Making a work of art is like creating a universe within which unknown, unexpected things happen and they reveal something of ourselves, of our gaze, of our ability to connect what is outside and what is inside, what is inside and what is beyond...

From some years now my research has moved towards abstraction. I work a lot with matter, with colour and with geometry, mostly lines, my geometry is very "gentle", my lines are like winding paths and this is how I feel when I trace them, like someone walking down a road.

My paintings are mostly born from a set of situations: a place I visited, a landscape, a space, a colour, a light, a certain atmosphere that stands out and lasts for a more or less long period of time, sometimes for many days and it gets fixed; it can also be accompanied by words, or by sounds.

Until all this "thickens" and begins to become gestures: a doing made by simple steps that then give life to a complexity and from sewing the canvas to the last stroke of the brush it seems to me that everything I do has the same importance.

I creatively use ancient techniques and ancient materials: fresco, tempera, pigments, powders… I feel very connected with this past, it is like a tool that allows me to move more easily in the confusion of contemporaneity.

While I work I feel guided, this is nice for me, yoI can use my manual skills, my intelligence with confidence and trust, without a continuous judgment.

I discover and get to know the painting only as I am doing it and this makes me feel like when I was playing as a child, as if I were on a great adventure, which can be dangerous sometimes and requires a lot of effort, a lot of commitment and real courage, but to experience it is always a good thing, even when it includes a sense of impossibility or feeling tired and distressed or even failure.

While I work, I try not to give much space to my own emotions, I try to stay in contact with the painting, to listen only to its voice and to keep everything else at bay.

When I am working well, the impressions I get while I paint are transferred to the vision of reality and often everything appears to me more vivid, more rich… more beautiful.

Stefania Orrù, works professionally as an artist since 1999. She started working for a master, a painter from Umbria in a “bottega” of the medieval and renaissance times, she uses ancient material and revisited ancient techniques. Her life and painting have been totally interconnected in a unique path. She has been in Umbria for 20 years, in the center of Italy, where she still has her atelier, and since 5 years she lives and works in Sicily.
